What books are out there now? What are the real challenges and opportunities for YA authors? What do teens expect to read? Lisa Yee – joining us via Skype Lisa Yee’s debut novel, Millicent Min, Girl Genius, won the prestigious Sid Fleischman Humor Award. In 2010 she will have over one million books in print, including Stanford Wong Flunks Big-Time, So Totally Emily Ebers, Absolutely Maybe, and her new bestselling series starting with Bobby vs. Girls (Accidentally) and Bobby the Brave (Sometimes). A Thurber House Children’s Writer-in-Residence, Lisa has been named a Fox Sports Network “American in Focus,” Publishers Weekly Flying Start, and USA Today Critics’ Top Pick. Other accolades include Washington Post Book of the Week (twice), American Library Association Notable, and a National Parenting Publications Honor for her American Girl historical novel, Good Luck, Ivy. Prior to being an author, she has been a TV writer/producer, journalist, advertising copywriter, and creative director of her own marketing/design company, Magic Pencil Studios. Her passion for YA fiction came a little later. Now she's a grown-up librarian, and is Manager of Innovation for San José Public Library. She still reads over 250 books every year. Daisy blogs about the latest and greatest in fiction of interest to LGBTQ teens. She has presented on this topic at the California Library Association and at the first-ever Young Adult Literature Symposium. Malinda Lo Malinda Lo’s novel, Ash, a lesbian re-telling of Cinderella, (Little Brown, 2009) was a finalist for the William C. Morrow Award for debut fiction. Malinda was born in China and moved to the United States as a child. She grew up in Colorado and has since lived in Boston, New York, London, Beijing, Los Angeles and San Francisco. She is the former managing editor of AfterEllen.com, the largest entertainment news website for lesbians and bisexual women. In 2006, Malinda was awarded the Sarah Pettit Memorial Award for Excellence in LGBT Journalism by the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and has master’s degrees from Harvard and Stanford universities. Malinda now lives in Northern California with her partner and their dog.
